Diamond Elegance

Ashley Morgan

April's birthstone is the ever-classic diamond! What should you know when buying a diamond? Diamonds are best known for their brilliance and durability, and choosing your ideal stone can require some knowledge about the stones themselves. Read more below to learn about how to pick your perfect diamond!

The cut of a diamond is a key element in the way the stone sparkles. The symmetry and proportion of each stone is what makes a diamond so beautiful. When cut well, a diamond should allow light to refract and reflect, enhancing the way the stone looks overall.

The color of a diamond is determined by studying the body of the stone. Many diamonds have natural hints of gray, brown, or yellow. Diamonds with only trace amounts of these colors allow more light to pass through. Diamonds with less natural color have a higher color grade: these stones are coveted for their spectral flashes of fiery brilliance.

A diamond’s clarity is determined by how many or how few inclusions can be seen within the stone. An inclusion is a small imperfection within the stone, usually created as the diamond formed. While certain diamond slices are valued for the way inclusions make the diamond unique, classic diamonds are more highly valued if there are fewer inclusions.

Carat weight is the most visible factor when choosing a diamond. All gemstones are weighed by carats, and it often has a bearing on the size of the stone itself. Simply put: the higher the carat weight, the bigger the diamond typically is.
